Protocols
A nod to the Club’s history stretching back more than 125 years means that the standards established back in time are still current for Downs Club gentlemen. Over time these protocols have been relaxed to be more in step with modern expectations, so that the current Club protocols below are not onerous, but simply good manners enforced.
Dress standard
A dress standard for gentlemen applies at the Downs Club for club events and private functions booked at the Club.
- Tailored long sleeve business shirt with collar
- Short sleeve business shirt with a collar up until 6 pm only
- Tailored slacks
- Clean dress jeans until 6pm only
- Enclosed shoes or leather dress boots
Some Club events require alternate dress standards, however these will be notified in event advertising.
Cash policy
The Club is mostly cashless, with trust placed in the honour of Club members to pay their account when it is due. To help the Club staff get to know you, please present your Downs Club card to ensure your purchases go to the correct Club account.
Spouse/partners
You do not have to be present for your spouse/partner and their guests to visit the club. She simply presents to staff the Downs Club card issued to her which assists with your Club account security.
Mobile phone policy
Mobile phones and other portable electronic devices such as tablets and iPads are permitted at the Downs Club but should remain in ‘SILENT’ or ‘VIBRATE’ mode at all times.
Members and their guests are requested to make or take calls or send messages and emails in an area of the Club where there isn’t another function or outside the Club building so other members will not be disturbed.
Members may access their devices within the Club to check calendars and make entries for business or Club purposes. Under these circumstances members should be discrete and respect the rights of other members to enjoy Club facilities.
Guest policy
Members must sign in all non- member guests into the guests register book located in the Club’s entrance hallway
Members’ bar policy
The policy of the Club is that “shouting” of drinks at the club is discouraged.
